Dear Concerned smoker
End stage COPD is a very vague term and basically indicates that the patient is on all the treatment he can be and have shortness of breath even at rest. However, this does not mean that the patient is at death's door - many people can live with end stage COPD. The danger is when an end stage COPD patient gets pneumonia or heart failure or pulmonary hypertension - this is then sometimes too much for the body to handle.
