Although eggs are an excellent food with a high protein content and also contain iron and beta-carotene, the Heart Foundation recommends that adult South Africans should limit their intake of eggs to 4 per week because egg yolk has a high cholesterol content of 210 per 50g egg which represents 70% of the suggested daily cholesterol intake. Egg whites on the other hand contain no cholesterol.
