EBV and referral to infectious disease physician

Why would a PCP refer a patient to an infectious disease physician when EBV markers are found in blood work? What would the findings mean?

EBV is Ebstein Barr virus, for which there is no treatment (the body's immune system usually fights the infection) but the doctor may have other concerns - did he not give a referral letter?
