Our expert says:
I am sorry to hear that you suffer from bipolar disorder and binge eating which you say has made you gain so much weight. Please discuss this problem with the psychiatrist who is treating your bipolar disorder because depression and antidepressants can either cause massive weight gain or weight loss depending on the individual patient and/or the medications that are prescribed to treat the depression. Please mention the binge eating because it is possible that some of the antidepressants could be contributing to this problem. If you are 'comfort eating' then having psychotherapy with a clinical psychologist may help you conquer this problem. The dr can refer you to a clinical psychologist. Another approach to binge eating which is an eating disorder, is to seek help from a team of experts which would include a clinical psychologist and a dietitian. If you live in Gauteng then it may help to contact Tara Hospital as they have an Eating Disorder clinic (phone (011) 783-2010. In Cape Town and environs you can contact the Kenilworth Clinic (021) 797-1400 and in KwaZulu Natal there is Riverview Manor (033) 701-1911, or contact them on: www.riverviewmanor.co.za
Please get help before this situation gets totally out of hand.
