drying out

my husband is 70 years old and has been an alcoholic for the past 48 years. He has decided to stop drinking, but i am worried about how we should do this. is it dangerous after all these years? would you suggest maybe cutting down over a period of a week or two? or should he just cold turkey?

No, please do not allow him to go cold turkey - they can develop severe withdrawal symptoms. Discuss with your doctor as the best option is to hospitalize them and treat them with medication to prevent fits and a drip to prevent dehydration. see http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/000764.htm
