Our expert says:
Hypnosis and prescription drugs don't work for cravings. There are some medications available for alcohol cravings, but they are very expensive and don't really offer a long term solution.
For heroin there are all sorts of medicines available, but mostly to help with the detoxing process.
Your son will have to wait for his turn until a place becomes available in a rehab. If he is serious about getting clean he will start attending NA meetings so long.
If he is really serious about getting better, HE would have been writing this note, not his parent. Beware of becoming enablers and making it all to easy for him.
If he is looking for an easy way out with over the counter medication, let him research it himself. It is not your job.
Often the people around the drug addict work harder at trying to get him or her better than the addicts themselves. This is called self-centred, grandiose entitlement.
I recommend that you contact the nearest Narcanon, a fellowship of the family of addicts.
In the meantime, feel free to contact us to discuss further rehab options for your son. You can contact Ruby at Tel: 021 790 7779 or at firstname.lastname@example.org
