Dr. referral for Bloodtests

Why do I HAVE to have a Dr. referral before I can have blood tests taken? I know what I want tested

I am a private patient and do not see the why I have to go to a Dr. and pay a consultation fee just to get a referral letter. Then I have to pay for the blood tests and another consultation with the Dr.

Why am I not allowed to get my own results?

The reason for a doctor's referral is to ensure that the results are not interpreted incorrectly. If the results are not normal, a doctor will also have to prescribe treatment.
