Dog does not bark when he is alone

Our worshond is sometimes very irritating because he barks for the slightest noise he hears, day and night. He sleeps alone in the kitchen at night and then he does not bark at all. The other night somebody tried to break into the house from outside the kitchen door and even the he did not bark. Why is this?

Hi Jacobus, I really dont know! The barking for the slightest noise could well be that the dog is nervous and is barking because of this and why he did not hear somebody break in could have just been that he was fast asleep and did not hear anybody. Dogs really can sleep very deeply.
Another possibility is that if he is predominately an outside dog, he does not regard the rest of the house as 'his'. This is not an uncommon event in this situation. Thks S
