Can be a neurotic habit, hard to stop - I''d see the vet, if I were you. If the dog is stressed about something, he may need something to soothe him. Make sure he''s not bored - lots of exercise, and toys/chews when you''re not around.

I had a cat who bit his own tail so badly, it had to be amputated. The vet said once they get into the habit, they don''t stop. Not sure if it''s the same with dogs. Cat is fine now.
