difference

Hi, please can you tell me if there is a difference between family responsibility leave (in other words if a child is sick and one has to take a child to the doctor etc) and compassionate leave (that is when a close family member dies)? Or do they fall under the same umbrella but just different terms?
Thanks
Regards
Bella

RE: DIFFERENCE

There is a difference between family responsibility leave and compasionate leave, however compasionate leave is not specifically legislated in terms of the basic conditions of employment act. Find out from the company whether they have a different leave section.

The correct term is family resonsiblity leave. It is 3 days per year for taking sick children to the doctor or death of an immediate family member. You are right, this is an umbrella term that covers both.

Some companies however give additional leave either by giving 5 or more days in total and calling it special leave or family responsibility leave and other companies give 3 days family responsibility leave for sick children (and some companies extend this to sick spuoses who need to be taken to hospital for operations and so on), and an additional few days of compassionate leave for deaths.
Where men take paternity leave, this falls under the 3 days of family responsibility leave.

3 days FRL is the minimum but many companies give more by giving separate compassionate leave and this is wher ethe confusion comes in.
