Dear Smpori
If your 17-month-old child already weighs 18 kg, which is close to the weight of a 6-year-old child you should have the child assessed by a medical doctor, because he or she may have an underlying physical problem that needs medical treatment (for example, diabetes or a growth hormone imbalance). This is not a situation where you can get assistance from a book or website. Your child needs to be examined and treated by experts, such as a Paediatrician and a registered dietitian (visit the Association for Dietetics in SA Website at: www.adsa.org.za and click on "Find a Dietitian" to find a dietitian in your area). The dietitian will have to help you change your child's diet and food intake in such a way that it not only addresses any underlying physical problem, but also helps him/her to lose weight, but still ensures that he/she obtains all the nutrients he/she needs for normal growth and development.
