Diabetes in children

Hi Doc

My husband has been diagnosed with diabetes when he was 4 year old. Our twins are now 11 months old and our concern is that one or both of our children might get it at some stage.

Just to be safe we want to test for it at least once every year of once every six months. What tests do you recommend. If we test it at home with my husband monitor what should the readings be for such small children.

Hallo Concerned
When you test - do it first thing in the morning to check fasting blood sugar - it may be better to let a lab do this once a year. Also look out for symptoms - see http://www.health24.com/medical/Condition_centres/777-792-808-1660,16533.asp
fasting blood sugar should be under 7.
