Degeneration of lower spine and neck vertebrae

Morning
I have an appointment with the surgeon on Thursday, but I heve a great fear of opperations as my Mother could not walk without cruthes after her back opp.
Do you think it is advisable for a person like me who has degeneration of the bones to have an operation?
I am 55 years old and is 1,65 and weigh 55 kilos.
