Hallo Susan
This is often caused by a pinched nerve or a nerve that is bruised. Give it a week or two to see if it heals by itself but if the "dead" area gets bigger or you develop weakness in the hand ask your doctor to send you to a neurologist for testing of the nerve to determine where the problem is.
