You may be describing a condition called Otits Media with Effusion (OME), due to inability of the Eustachian tube to function properly. This may be due to an upper respiratiry tract infection. most likely caused by a virus.
The condition results in fluid build-up in the middle ear cleft, and can be diagnosed with an examination, and confirmed by tympanomatry. It usually settles on antibiotics and cortisone, and in adults the condition usually settles after a period of time. This could be after three months only, If it does not settle, the condition can be managed by the placement of grommets. Consult your doctor.
