Calorie counting is not as popular as it was about 10 years ago. If you do decide to try and count calories (actually kilocalories) then you will have to check on each food label or use the Calorie Counter on the Diet Site to calculate how many kcals you eat in a day. Generally speaking adult women require 1500 kcal per day to lose weight. Nowadays most people use low-fat, low-GI diets to lose weight. Reduce your energy intake by eating an energy-reduced, low-fat, high-fibre diet (click on 'Diet' at the top of this page, 'Weight loss', ‘Balanced diet’ and then on 'Slimming Diet' for a copy of such a diet). It is also difficult to specify exactly how many kcal you should burn during a cardio session because this would depend on so many different factors: your age, present weight, gender, type of exercise and level of fitness. Rather just stick to the recommendation that doing 30 min of cardio exercise a day will assist with weightloss. Some days you may use up more energy and other days less, but the important thing is to do regular daily exercise that burns kcals.
