Dear Sunshine
A cough is usually a sign of underlying infection or allergy. A cough mixture is only symptomatic treatment and won't solve the problem/clear up the cause of the cough. If he is not feverish, and does not have other symptoms, it may clear up on its own and you can watch and wait a while. You can use something like Benylin to loosen any phlegm and you can give him something like Zyrtec/Clarityne if he has hayfever. If he is feverish, or does not eat well, looks tired and listless, or the cough gets worse, rather take him to your doctor.
