Q. Constant blocked nose and on and off chesty cough

Dear Prof,

My three year old son''s is contantly blocked and has a chesty dry cough which comes and then goes. This has been going on since March this year, we took him to the Paed who prescribed singulair, Deselex, sterimar, flomist and zinnat antibiotic. He becomes better for a week and then the next week he would be sick. I have cut dairy products on his diet and fast foods and also put him on Zimplex and Scotts but he isnt getting better. Last week we took him for chest therapy at the Physio and they even nebelised him with saline. What could be the problem with him, I am really worried as he is taking too many medications and i am not sure if i should vaccinate him for flu as well? and also what can i use to nebulise him besides the saline?

It is almost certain that your son has allergic rhinitis [nasal allergy] and asthma. He must be tested for allergies and put onto the correct treatment for asthma and allergic rhinitis.He should be seen by a paediatrician with experience in paediatric allergy. There are experts in all the main centres in SA.
