collagen taken orally??

Hello Dr

Just a quick question regarding collagen capsules: does it actually help the skin restore elasticity, by taking collagen orally or is it just a waste of time?? (ive already bought some caps by Collagene)

Thanks :)

Hi Joy, thank you for the question.

No one really knew the answer to that question until recently, when a study was performed at the University of Pretoria, near the end of last year. This particular study “indicated an increase in skin fullness, reduction of wrinkles and improved skin health with 6 weeks of use of collagen supplements” using Purelogical’s Collagen Supplement. According to their website a quantitative measurement was used (VISIA analysis) with no mention to skin biopsies pre and post or the exact improvement in percentage terms; and most importantly, there is no mention of how the collagen was measured – if at all - before and after the treatment.
Following from this, my advice is if one can afford it, then give it a try and let us know, as there may be a benefit directly to ones skin and therefore to other areas such as nails and hair.
