Colectomy

Hi, Doc

A few questions regarding a colectomy:

1. Is it normal to have diarreah after having a total colectomy?
2. Are you at risk for any nutrient deficiencies? Supplements then needed?
3. Is increase water intake essential since the colon absorb water?
4. What diet is usually prescribed for patients after a colectomy?

Thank you very much for all your help

1. The colon adds volume to your stools and therefore, after removal, diarreah is common.

2. The colon is mainly responsible for the absorption of fluid. I do however, suggest that a dietician is consulted after a total colectomy.

3. Increasing water intake is not necessary.
