The high phosphorous levels in fizzy drinks does in fact interfere with the absorption of calcium in the body. He should try and cut down on his intake rather drastically. A dietery intake of at least 1000mg of calcium is necesary to maintain bone health. Other risk factors like smoking and alcohol abuse, as well as medications etc, can also contribute to developing osteoporosis.
