Hi Eyes, thank you for the question.
This is a difficult question to answer over the net as the treatment of ‘dark circles’ is dependent on the cause. Your best option would be to consult a cosmetic dermatologist, plastic surgeon, or an aesthetic medical practitioner with specific training in the eye area so that an examination can be performed and the best treatment options discussed.
Generally speaking there are 3 main reasons for ‘dark circles’:
Tear Trough: this is a depression just below the eye radiating from the inner corner to below the lower eyelid and is caused by a loss of fat support. This allows the skin to fall onto the underlying bone producing a shadow effect.
Pigmentation: typically caused by sun damage but may have other causes
Veins: a number of superficial venous structures may be responsible for the darkening of the area
All of the above or a combination of the above mentioned causes
Treatment of the above:
Tear Trough: fillers have shown to significantly improve the depression and shadow effect by lifting the skin and will also help to support the skin in this area. this procedure should only be performed by a doctor with specific training in the use of fillers in the tear trough area (only a handful in SA!)
Pigmentation: IPL, fractional bi-polar skin resurfacing, or laser skin resurfacing
Veins: laser vein removal
