Child suffers from sinus

My 5 year old suffers from sinus problems, and a while back fluid actually ran from his ear. His adenoids have been removed, and his blood tests for allergies is negative. What can be the cause?

Dear Letitia

It is uncommon for children age five years to suffer from sinusitis, as they hardly have poorly developed sinusses at that age. It can however occur, and if repeatedly the case, you should consult an ENT surgeon for an opinion. Only if indicated, he/she may recommend a LIMITED CT scan of the sinusses to exclude a problem with the drainage of the sinusses. Fluid draining from the ear could be due to a middle ear infection, and is possibly due to an upper respiratory tract infection. It may be necessary to have an ENT examination to find and treat the possible cause.
