Chest pains at night

Hi Doc
my boyfriend has been getting waht we thought was bad hayfever for the past few weeks... at first we thought it was from dog hair, then maybe from beer (something in the beer perhaps) but no we' re not sure.
He' s fine all evening but as soon as it gets to bedtime his chest starts closing and he coughs for ages. There is nothing different about the bedroom or the bedding and we haven' t changed detergents so i' m stumped. What could it be?
He says it feels like his chest is closing on him and he actually feels like he' s got a chest infection, but surely if that was the case he' d feel like that all the time, not jsut at night?
He also doens' t smoke so we' re baffled.
Any ideas?

He probably gets acid reflux when he lies down - the acid irritates the throat and windpipe. Try giving him Gaviscon before bed and he should not eat a big meal just before going to bed. If it persists he may need to get a gastroscopy examination and or x/ray of the chest.
