Cat has fits

My cat (16yrs old) has had fits on several occassion and last night she had another one. The vet gave us pills to calm her down but unfortunately we didn' t have any to giver her last night. I got such a big fright last night. It' s a terrble sight because you can' t do anything. Her paws went all stiff. Afterwards she seemed to have calmed down and purred away. What causes these fits?
