cat compatibility

We had cat1 for a year when we got cat2. They were very close although cat1 was in charge, and cat2 was always aware of this. When cat1 died after 13 years, cat2 was lonely.

We then got cat3. Cat 2 (who was now about 11 years old) immediately became the boss, and cat3 looked up to her. They were also very close and played often

Cat2 died a year ago, and cat3 was devistated. She seems quite a bright cat. She was only three years old and looked very lonely. We decided to get her a friend - and got cat4.

Cat3 became very teratorial and spent weeks hissing at the new small cat. Cat4 very soon learned her position in the house, and that cat3 was the boss.

Cat3 has become very much an old granny over the last year since cat4 arived. She sleeps all day, and is not warm to cat4.

Cat3 is now 4 years old

The problem is with cat4. She is now a year old and is very active. She would love to play and run around - but cat3 is not interested ! Cat4 looks so longingly at cat3 dying for her to play, but she just ignores her. Cat4 looks very frustrated.

All the cats were female.

What can we do ? We love our two cats and dont want to get another one. These two were supposed to be good friends - but the older one just does not want to play with the younger one. (Excpet maybe once a week they will both enjoy chasing each other around the garden for about 15 minutes)

Any advise will be appreciated.
