Dear Adele
They want to keep the patient calm and painfree, so they sedate the patients, they also want optimal oxygen to the brain and they want to prevent seizures due to irritation of the brain tissue. The greatest danger after the operation is developing of increased pressure in the brain, and keeping the patient sedated helps to prevent this.
