Breastfeeding but spastic colon

I have a spastic colon &  am breastfeeding my 1 week old daughter. What can I use? I haven' t had any bowel movement for over a week now. When I was pregnant I drank epsom salts but a nurse at the hospital told me this dries up your milk?

Dear Anon
You can use Lactulose safely - it is not absorbed by the body but just pulls water into the bowel, softening the stool and causing bulking, which stimulates bowel movement. It may be useful to just use a Microlax or Fleet enema to get your tummy going.
