breast cancer

Hi Doc. If someone has breast cancer, why would they do radiation therapy and not a total masectomy? Are they being conservative? She is 25 years old. Thanks.

Radiation therapy is normally given when the cancer has spread beyond the breasts, like for instance to the lymph nodes in the armpits. Radiation therapy can also be given to shrink the size of the cancer.
