Dear Michiel
Generally speaking blood sugar should be removed out of the blood stream quite rapidly. However, if the patient has a problem with his or her insulin production or insulin resistance, then the sugar won't be removed rapidly and the blood sugar levels can remain high. If such a patient has a fasting blood glucose sample tested or undergoes a glucose tolerance test, the doctor will be able to determine if he/she has insulin resistance or even type 2 diabetes.
