Blood in throat

My husband spits out a very small amount of blood (his phlegm) every morning. It happens after he wakes up and then dissapears for the rest of the day. This has been going on for almost a year. He initially thought it was realted to a sinus " drip"  . What could be the problem.

Dear Suzanne
He needs to have this checked out - could be a signs of TB or lungcancer - he needs at least a chest x/ray, sputum sent to the lab and a proper exam of lungs en sinuses.
