Black blood vomiting

Hi

What could cause vomiting of black blood? My aunt died on saturday. She lived in a govt mental home as she was schizophrenic. She was unwell for about 6 months previously - didn''t want to eat and had pain in her legs tpo the point that she was eventually in a wheelchair - but doctors refused to tell us what was wrong! We were told that she fell over &  vomited black blood and then died. What could have been going on?
She was in her 70s and had a lifetime of schizo meds.
Thanks.
