Biting paws

Hi, my dog Dan (Golden labrador one year old) has been biting his paws. They don' t seem to cause him any pain and he' s never drawn blood, but when he licks and bites them they do look red. He seems to do this mostly in the morning. Do you think it could be a food allergy ? He is on Eukanuba for Large breed puppies. Megan

Dear Megan

More likely to be contact allergy, unlikely to be food related. Give him Mirracote over his food daily.

Hard to say, but if it' s an allergy at all, it sounds more like a contact one - ie, something he' s walking on. Does he do stuff in the mornings he doesn' t do at other times? Like walking on a particular surface?

Some dogs also do this as a sign of stress or boredom - make sure he has plenty of toys and stuff to chew on, and that he' s not insecure about something.
