Bipolar Disorder

Whats all the fuss with this Bipolar disorder that suddenly seems to be all over the place, i see adverts for support groups etc.

Is this a really big problem currently, or is it just hyped up.

A very good friend of mind has recently been " diagnosed"  with this...but i dont understand it, like is it really as bad as they make it out to be, worse then depression for example.

Are people diagnosed with this really more at risk for getting sick or dying or hurting other people?

How do you deal with someone with this?

OK, in any condition there is sometimes an annoying degree of hype, And some people may diagnose it too readily and too often ; but Bipolar Disorder is a very real and swerious problem for many people. It used, way back, to be call Manic-Depressive Disorder, and includes both episodes of significant depression, and episodes of mania when one's mood swings high, and one gets hyperactive and too uncritical of the daft ideas that may occur to one. Support groups are needed, and there aren't many of them. The condition needs a different treatment plan including meds to serve as mood stabilizers.
People with the condition are definitely more at risk o harming themselves, maybe slightly more at risk o harming others, depending on how the condition affects them

A friend of mine last year commented on this aswell at a braai, saying that its almost like a trend all of a sudden....lots of people being diagnosed as bipolar.....there is definitely over diagnosis and 88% of psychiatric first time diagnosis is totally wrong (shrinks love stats so i thought id throw one in there) maybe due to the stress of modern living more people are having life crisis taking emotional strain and then labeled bi polar???
