Bilharzia

I went swimming in a lake/river in Ko Samui, Thailand about 8 years ago. What are the chances that I could have been infected by Bilharzia and can I be privately tested in the UK? My understanding is that you can be infected without symptoms for years - is this correct?

Dear Anonymous
Yes you can be tested with a blood test ( antibody test) and most labs will also ask for a stool and urine sample. Symptoms may be light or absent for years.
