Our expert says:
The one you enjoy the most, that's the short and correct answer. One can play the numbers and do the maths and work out how many calories you burn, but that doesn't help. In theory, the run SHOULD burn more. but you're a classic example of why the theory doesn't hold. It sounds as though you cycle at a higher relative level than you run, and that is probably because you're naturally more suited to cycling than to running. Therefore, cycling is better for you. But the key is which you enjoy. This is not a short term fix, it's something that will take you many months, so enjoyment, above all these other equations, is the most important thing.
With regards to the calories and kilojoules, a calorie is equal to 4.2 kJ, so you multiply by that to go from cal to kJ, or divide to go the other way.
Finally, just be careful that you don't get yourself into a knot with all these numbers. It doesn't actually matter. All that counts is that four or five times a week, you get in 45 minutes of good exercise. do that, and the numbers take care of themselves. remember that sensible eating is vital, so sort that out too, but just take your time, be patient and stick with it.
