Dear MB
Asparagus contains certain sulphur compounds (dimethyl sulphide, dimethyl disulphide, dimethyl sulphoxide, etc) that have a strong smell when metabolised. When these compounds are excreted into the urine they also make the urine smell. Although not all people are able to smell these sulphur breakdown products in the urine, we do all excrete them.
Best regards

Certain compounds in asparagus are metabolized giving urine a distinctive smell due to various sulfur-containing degradation products, including various thiols, thioesters, and ammonia.

The volatile organic compounds responsible for the smell are identified as:
dimethyl sulfide,
dimethyl disulfide,
dimethyl sulfoxide, and
dimethyl sulfone.
