antihistamine for children 1 year of age

My son has trouble sleeping at night due to a congested nose and therefore not able to breath properly.

We used Drixine and Iliadin but according to the pharmacist we should not use it for more than 5 continuous days.

At this stage we have a humidifier in his room at night and use sterimar to try and clear his congestion before he goes to sleep.

We consulted with a doctor and they said that it is probably more of an allergy than anything else and that we should try an antihistamine.

We have consulted with a pharmacist in town but according to them they do not have anything they can give me to alleviate his congestion as they only have stuff for children 2 years and older.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Dear Kiriklapper
Yes using Drixine or Illiadin may lead to a rebound blocked nose if used for more than 5 days and should be avoided. You can try saline nose spray to soften mucous and help mucus drainage. Try using Karvol capsules - a few drops on his pillow may help (do NOT give as medicine - on pillow only) . Avoid decongestants. If all else fails you could try Tinset drops per mouth 1 mg/kg body mass twice daily, but he may need prescription.
If your son is drinking cow's milk, try to avoid dairy, substitute with soya. Also try and see if certain foods or contact with pets trigger the blocked nose. Your doctor can do allergy tests on the most common irritants if needed
