Aeroplane and ears

Dear Doc
On Sunday from the time the plane started to descend till it landed i had the most awful painful ears. Is there anything i can do in future to help this? Many thanks

This is often caused by pressure building up in the middle ear when the eustachian tubes are not open - you can use a decongestant nosespray in future if you have a blocked nose or a slight cold, or chew chewing gum while decending.
