Acne

Hi Doc. My son has bad acne and has been on all sorts of antibiotics prescribed by a dermatologist which haven' t really helped. Yesterday someone told him that he must eat a handful of raisins every day and this will help. What do you think? Thank you.

Hallo J
Acne is caused by increased production of sebum oils in the skin and together with a bacteria (propionibacterium acne) it causes inflammation in the skin. Raisins contain vit C, antioxidants and fibre which is overall good for your immunity system but would not specifically clear up acne. If he has tried Benzoylperoxide, topical antibiotics, oral antibiotics, and it hasn't helped, a course of Roaccutane for 3-4 months may be the answer.
