Meal replacement shakes and excercise

I have lost 23 kilo's on a well known weight loss product since february this year. I see this as having my shakes as normal. I'm still weighing 120kg and decided I would like to start with weight training, however people are discouraging me not to gym whilst on the product. Can I go to the gym after having 2 shakes during the day, or should I rather follow a formulated diet for weight training and weight loss.
