The article all makes sense except the bit that advises 3 Tablespoons of olive or canola oil per day. This should surely be 3 Teaspoons.

Dear Margaret
Even on a very-low-fat diet people still need an intake of the essential fatty acids such as found in olive or canola oil. The general recommendation is 3 x Tablespoons or 45 g per day. If for example, the person on the diet does not adhere to using fat-free yoghurt, milk, cottage cheese and very lean meat/fish then the quantity of fat could be reduced to 2 tablespoons or 30 g per day. Reducing the essential fatty acid intake to below this level (e.g. 3 teaspoons or 1 tablespoon (15g) per day) would deprive that person of these essential fatty acids and make the diet unbalanced.
