A burgeoning waistline equals a flaccid love life. That may seem like a maxim to those gym rats who worship their abs and arguably place definition over chemistry. But there’s scientific evidence that obesity causes erectile dysfunction.

The American Urological Association says that men with a 42-inch waistline are nearly twice as likely to be hit with the dreaded downtime as those with a 32-inch girth.

In a study of nearly 2 000 men aged between 51 and 88, more 34% with severe erectile dysfunction were overweight.

The study, funded by the National Cancer Institute, the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute and the American Cancer Society, also found that inactive men were more likely to suffer erectile dysfunction than men who exercised for at least 30 minutes a day.

The main causes of erectile dysfunction are excessive drinking, smoking and being obese. - (William Smook)
