When is your sore throat a problem?

accreditation
Having a sore throat this time of year is common. With winter approaching, we are
more prone to develop a sore throat due to a viral infection.
But when is it a problem and what should you do about it?

Types of Sore Throat:

• Most sore throats are due to viral infections and usually clear within 3 days.

• Occasionally bacteria causes infections like strep throat and tonsillitis which may require antibiotic treatment. This is usually associated with fever and significant pain.

• Other causes includes reflux disease, smoking and allergies.

What you should do:

For viral infections gargling with salt water (half a teaspoon of salt in water) and using lozenges to sooth the throat usually does the trick.

When you suspect bacterial infections (severe pain, persistent fevers) visit your doctor for a course of antibiotics.
