Nobody wants to be lied to, but it happens to all of us. The trick is being able to identify when you’re being lied to.
Today we found that out the SAPS have brought in a clinical psychologist from their Investigative Psychology division to monitor the testimony of Oscar Pistorius.
While she’ll be looking for signs that Oscar might be deviating from the truth, you can look for the same triggers in your everyday life. Here are some of the big giveaways:
Holding eyesight
Everybody knows that liars can’t look you in the eye. Unfortunately liars know this too, that’s why they’ll overcompensate and stare for too long.
Fidgeting, or not
Liars are more likely to stay unnaturally still while they concoct their next sentence.
Touching their face
This helps to provide them comfort. Some research suggests that the higher on the face they touch the worse the lie.
Tight jaw, heavy breathing
Lying is tough work. The tension is likely to show itself in subtle ways like a clenched jaw, heavy breathing and sweating.
There are many more signs that you, and the police’s psychologist, can look out for.
