Most parents agree that it comes in handy to know a bit of first aid. When an arm is fractured, for example, a sling can help to immobilise it. This will reduce both pain and the risk of further injury.
Take action:
- Place an open triangular bandage between the chest and the injured person's forearm
- Now bring the top end over the uninjured shoulder and bring round the neck to the injured arm's front
- The lower end of the bandage is now brought up over the hand and forearm and tied to the upper end just above the collarbone (make sure that the hand is slightly higher than the elbow with the fingers protruding out of the sling)
- Finish by pinning the apex of the triangular bandage at the elbow or, if there is no safety pin, tuck or twist it into the bandage to lock it.
