South Africans not only consume too much sodium (black people consume 7.8g salt daily, coloured people 8.5g and white people 9.5 g) but their potassium intake is insufficient for good health, says Dr Krisela Steyn of the department of medicine at UCT.

It's a known fact that higher sodium levels correlate with an increased risk for high blood pressure, but a new study suggests that potassium helps offset sodium’s adverse effects.
