Blood pressure measurements

It’s estimated that up to 25% of blood pressure measurements are false, which can lead to diagnostic error or over-treatment.

To get the most accurate reading:

• Be early for your appointment.

• Take something to read or do, and relax.

• Don’t drink coffee or fizzy or energy drinks with caffeine 30 – 60 minutes before testing.

• Don’t smoke for 30 - 60 minutes before the test.

• Don’t do vigorous exercise beforehand.

• If you’re over 60 or have diabetes your test will sometimes be repeated after standing for about two minutes. This is to see if you have postural hypotension, when standing up abruptly causes a sharp fall in blood pressure.
