Are you honest about your health?

Last month, we conducted a survey. Several thousands of you lovingly doled out information about what you do, or don’t, how healthy you are, or aren’t and what you plan to do about it, or not. Many of the results made for predictable reading, most of you drink, some of you smoke  and barely any of you take illegal drugs. But there were a fair few interesting tidbits in there.

Basically, we’re all lying to ourselves, and we need to stop.

According to the survey, only 8% of you have a heart condition and 6% have diabetes. This paints a very different picture to national statistics which puts the incidence of heart disease at 30% in men and 25% in women. It is estimated that 1 in 6 South African women have diabetes.

The same applies when it comes to our mental health. 9% of respondents claimed they suffered from a mood disorder or mental illness when in fact it is believed that a quarter of the population suffer from such problems.

If prevention is better than cure, then honesty will save us all. Being realistic about your chances of developing an illness allows you to make the lifestyle changes necessary to slow it down or even avoid it altogether.

Take a look at your family history and your lifestyle, get your cholesterol and blood sugar  checked. It might just save your life.

Have a look at the key survey findings.
