Over a decade ago, the DA pulled off a miraculous feat by pushing the ANC out of power in the Western Cape – the first party to do this in democratic South Africa. Now with less than three weeks before a watershed general election, the DA seems to be battling to keep its crown, writes Jason Felix.
On 22 April 2009, the DA took its first step to governing the Western Cape. In that year, it got a slim majority of just 51% of the vote, marking the first time since the end of apartheid that a party scored an overall majority in the province.
Since then, the DA has grown with every election, hitting the 59% mark in the province in 2014.
